The course consists of a Monday Seminar/Colloquium (BMAC) where attendance is required. It also involves doing some homework assignments.
Most of the seminars will involve research presentations by faculty in the CSU CS department and other institutions. Sometimes there may be student best paper awardees presenting their conference talks. At other times, the instructor or guest speakers may discuss topics such as the following:
- Finding an advisor
- Discovering your intellectual passion
- Evaluating for yourself what level of research you want to do.
- Reading and critiquing papers
- Writing skills
- Ethics in research
Grading
The course grade will be determined based on class attendance and written homework.
Class attendance (70%):
In-person students (section 001) must be present in class and respond to an iclicker quiz during the class in the designated classroom. No credit otherwise. Typically the classes will be held in CSB130, but occasionally they may happen in other rooms on campus. For example, ISTeC Distinguished Lectures typically happen in a Lory Student Center ballroom. You will be notified when the classroom is different.
Occasionally there may be a seminar on a different day than Monday. Attending these seminars will give you extra credit, each with the same value as regular attendance.
Distance students (section 801) will have to watch the Echo360 video and answer a question as a Canvas quiz. Echo360 views are visible to the instructor. Viewing and answering the quiz are both required to get attendance points.
Written homework (30%):
A small number of written assignments will be given throughout the semester and these will correspond to the basic research skill topics.
