Communication Guidelines

Discord will be the main out-of-class communication platform for this course. Therefore, if you need to contact the instructor, TAs, or peers do so through the Teams channel. You will be added to the channel. Please contact a TA if you are not added yet. Responses will be provided only during work hours (M-F, 9am – 5pm).

Please use teams for communication during office hours with the TAs. All formal communications will be through email: compsci_cs462@colostate.edu

Students are expected to be professional in the way they communicate with their fellow participants (i.e., classmates, TAs, instructors). “Appropriate” participation also means a good balance of active, expressive engagement and quiet internal engagement (e.g., respectful listening; demonstrating sensitivity to others by not monopolizing; being open to others’ experiences and analyses). Your class participation grade will be based partially on how well you follow these guidelines. In general, I will be looking for the appropriateness of your overall professionalism and interpersonal skillfulness during the semester. This skill set is important for graduate students and will serve you well no matter where you go.

Teaching scholars (e.g., Neff & Weimer, 1988) have suggested some of the following dimensions of effective class participation:

  • Cognitive (logic, knowledge, creativity)
  • Expressive (clarity, fluency, conciseness)
  • Affective (enthusiasm, attention, and demonstrated interest)
  • Preparation (reflecting in advance on material necessary to participate effectively)
  • Contribution to the process of learning (relevance, insight, thoughtfulness of participation)
  • Reasonable frequency of participation

Make-up Policy

There will be no make-up for missed in-class activities, and students will receive a score of zero. Make-up exams are only given for extraordinary circumstances (e.g., illness, family emergency). Students must consult with the instructor as soon as possible, preferably before the start of an activity or exam.

Class attendance

Please attend lectures when possible, either in person or through echo360. If you are going to depend on remote participation, please make this clear to the instructor so that they can double-check that everything is working. Lab attendance is not mandatory, the lab sessions are supposed to be helpful for those that want them and not compulsory for those that do not. Students who achieve at least 80% attendance of lectures and whose conduct is deemed professional and appropriate will receive full participation credit. In the event that unplanned absences occur due to illness, family emergency, etc., you can seek a participation allowance from the instructor. It is best to get this kind of message sent before the unplanned absence, although we understand that this is not always possible.

Universal Design for Learning/Accommodation of Needs

I am committed to the principle of universal learning. This means that our classroom, our virtual spaces, our practices, and our interactions be as inclusive as possible. Mutual respect, civility, and the ability to listen and observe others carefully are crucial to universal learning.

If you are a student who will need accommodations in this class, please contact me to discuss your individual needs. Any accommodation must be discussed in a timely manner. A verifying memo from the Student Disability Center may be required before any accommodation is provided. My goal is to design a class for which special accomodations are not needed, the basic rules should be flewxible enough to suit your needs. Please help me achieve this goal.

The Student Disability Center (SDC) has the authority to verify and confirm the eligibility of students with disabilities for the majority of accommodations. While some accommodations may be provided by other departments, a student is not automatically eligible for those accommodations unless their disability can be verified and the need for the accommodation confirmed, either through SDC or through acceptable means defined by the particular department. Faculty and staff may consult with the SDC staff whenever there is doubt as to the appropriateness of a request by a student with a disability.

The goal of SDC is to normalize disability as part of the culture of diversity at Colorado State University. The characteristic of having a disability simply provides the basis of the support that is available to students. The goal is to ensure students with disabilities have the opportunity to be as successful as they have the capability to be. Support and services are offered to student with functional limitations due to visual, hearing, learning, or mobility disabilities as well as to students who have specific physical or mental health conditions due to epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, AIDS, psychiatric diagnoses, etc. Students who are temporarily disabled are also eligible for support and assistance.

Any student who is enrolled at CSU, and who self-identifies with SDC as having a disability, is eligible for support from SDC. Specific accommodations are determined individually for each student and must be supported by appropriate documentation and/or evaluation of needs consistent with a particular type of disability. SDC reserves the right to ask for any appropriate documentation of disability in order to determine a student’s eligibility for accommodations as well as in support for specific accommodative requests. The accommodative process begins once a student meets with an accommodations specialist in the SDC.

Late work policy

Assignments are to be submitted through Canvas, presented in class, or stored in a repository. Specifics will be included in each assignment. Always check the assignment information for due dates. You lose 25% of the maximum possible grade per day for any late submissions, and I reserve the right not to grade late submissions at all.

We encourage students to make use of the CSU Counseling Services.
